A major WhatsApp update will mean that it is no longer supported by some older iPhones.

The change is expected to take effect from October 24, and if you’ve had your handset for a few years, you may need to upgrade if you want to continue using the app.

WhatsApp will no longer support iOS 11 and earlier, which means those with iPhone 5s compatible with iOS 11 through X may need to upgrade their operating system to continue using the app.

“Devices and software change often, so we regularly review the operating systems we support and make updates,” WhatsApp said.

“These devices may also lack the latest security updates or lack the features required to run WhatsApp.”

“To choose what to stop supporting, every year, like other tech companies, we look at which devices and software are the oldest and have the fewest people still using them.”

Before the app stops working on your phone, WhatsApp should alert you directly.

“Before we stop supporting your operating system, you will be notified directly in WhatsApp in advance and reminded repeatedly to upgrade.”

iOS 11 was released in 2017 and can only run 64-bit apps. When introduced, it lost support for a range of 32-bit applications available on older operating systems at the time.

WhatsApp will bid farewell to the operating system when it updates its required specs this month.

“To keep up with the latest technological advancements, we regularly stop supporting older operating systems to direct our resources towards supporting newer ones.”

You can update your operating system by going to your iPhone’s “General” settings and selecting “Software Update”.

If your handset doesn’t have a 64-bit processor, like the iPhone 5 and 5C models, it’s not supported by the iOS 11 update, which means you’ll need to upgrade the phone itself to run the app.
