A preview of What if…? Season 2 confirms that some familiar faces are returning to the MCU multiverse, both heroes and villains from Phases 3-4.
A good number of familiar faces will populate Marvel What if…? Season 2 stories, including some of the more recent Marvel Cinematic Universe Phases 3 and 4.
Footage from the animated series was shown at Marvel Studios’ animation panel at San Diego Comic-Con attended by CBR, with director and executive producer Bryan Andrews saying, “We continue to push the boundaries of what is possible in the multiverse.” One of the first clips fans witnessed saw Captain Carter, Black Widow, and Steve Rogers surrounded by robots in a forest. Then, a blast from Phase 2’s past comes as Hela and Ego make appearances, along with a new voiceless Black Panther, as well as Iron Man on the gladiator planet Sakaar of Thor: Ragnarok. A final clip shows two MCU powers in battle, with Asgardian King Odin facing off against Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings villain Wenwu aka the Mandarin.
Currently, it’s unknown if live-action MCU actors like Cate Blanchett or Tony Leung will voice their animated counterparts in what if…?, or who will provide the voice for Black Panther’s return in season 2 after the death of Chadwick Boseman. However, the panel concluded with the premiere of What if…?The episode “What If Captain Carter Fighted the Hydra Stomper”, which saw Peggy Carter fight modern-day Steve Rogers, Captain America: winter soldier– inspired setting. The episode features a voice return of Haley Atwell as Captain Carter, who recently brought the hero to live action in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Similar to the comics of the same name, What if…? takes viewers through alternate timelines inspired by key films from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Each story is told by the ubiquitous Watcher (voiced by Jeffrey Wright), an alien being who observes all variant timelines but refrains from intervening in them. However, Season 1 ended with the Watcher breaking that vow and assembling a team of heroes – including Captain Carter and Star-Lord T’Challa – to defeat an Infinity Stone-powered Ultron. Teased in the new footage, a storyline by Sakaar featuring Iron Man and Gamora was supposed to be released during Season 1, but was ultimately pushed back due to the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic on development.
In addition to Season 2, Marvel has revealed footage for the next one. What if…?the consequences Marvel Zombies.
