‘Saints Row’s Wild Customization Features Leave ‘GTA 5’ in the Dust

Personalization options in the Saints Row series have always been goofy, with a plethora of ways to outfit your vehicles, weapons and, of course, your own personal crime boss. the Saints Row the reboot expands on this beloved series staple, with more options than ever to create exactly the character you want. As part of a new video, developer Volition has given us a look at the practicalities of the game’s upcoming customization features, highlighting all the crazy things you can do to create your dream character – or your nightmares.

The most important aspect of personalization in Saints Row adapts the appearance of your character. Everything from your skin, height, facial features, hair, and tattoos can be changed as much or as little as you want. But you don’t have to change anything if you don’t want to. Players have the option to skip the details of character creation and choose a pre-made character and quickly get into the action. That said, if you like to spend a lot of time tweaking every little aspect of your character, you’ll feel right at home in Saints Row.

One of the standout new features is asymmetrical face customization, allowing you to isolate each side to customize however you see fit. You can truly create gruesome monstrosities in this game, which goes hand in hand with the goofy themes and twists we can expect Saints Row.

You’ll also be able to change your skin type, with options ranging from a metallic look, to broken glass, and even one that looks like a galaxy with stars and planets. We’re also excited about the different contacts you can use, such as Cat’s Eyes, and one that looks like the Eye of Sauron from The Lord of the Rings. A variety of prosthetics, voice types, and emotes allow you to further customize your character.

Saints Row is known for its risque sense of humor and the games often play nudity for fun. This doesn’t seem to change on reboot. But you don’t have to see naked people if you don’t want to – or if you’re a content creator who doesn’t want to be demonetized. You can discreetly blur or place emojis on your character’s swimsuit areas to make the experience less explicit. That said, this game probably won’t be particularly kid-friendly.

Customization isn’t limited to your character – there’s no shortage of rides to choose from, with a host of cars, boats, hoverboards, helicopters, bikes and jets to customize however you like. You will be able to change the colors and add different hood decorations, patterns, spoilers and tire types.

A long list of functional mods is also available. Add nitrous to your monster truck to easily get away from the cops. Or completely modify your car to perform well in off-road situations, making it easier to handle in the desert.

There’s even a tow rope you can use to pull other vehicles as you wreak havoc across town. (We’re especially happy attaching a ball and chain to the back of a car to decimate absolutely anything we pass.) When the going gets tough, be sure to use the ejection seat to launch yourself into the air for a quick getaway, leaving all the destruction behind.

Weapon customization seems to be a little less in-depth than characters or cars, although there are some eye-catching mods for your guns. Almost every part of a gun can be modified, from stock, magazine, body, barrels and optics. Just like your character’s different skin types, weapons also have a variety of material surfaces, such as rainbow, rock, and various camouflages.

One of the most intriguing features on offer is the ability to transform your weapon into something completely different. You will be able to convert your rocket launcher into a guitar case (as in Desperado), and your assault rifle in an umbrella. There’s something so wonderfully ridiculous about going wild and shooting an umbrella at anyone who stands in your way.

Another extremely interesting feature of Saints Row it’s being able to completely personalize your home port. When you start, your HQ will be in bad shape, but as you accumulate experience, money, and Saints to fight alongside you, your house will eventually begin to take shape.

As you find collectibles around the world, you’ll be able to use some of them to decorate your home, like a massive robot statue, dinosaur heads, and a fire-breathing tree (which sounds on the mark for Saints Row).

Your HQ will also serve as your hub for modifying everything we’ve mentioned so far, as long as the items are already in your possession. All items purchased from world shops will appear at your HQ, giving you a convenient place to adjust your character, weapons, clothing, and vehicles.

But it’s not just about flash – HQ will also be functional. For one thing, this is where you’ll swap out the vehicles used by your Saints. Plus, the second-floor Criminal Empire table – every good hideout has one – which lets you plan your takeover of the city. In total, there are 14 different locations that you can expand across the city, so there will be plenty to do in Saints Row.

Saints Row will launch on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC on August 23, 2022.
