Robotics and AI: The Future of Design for Assisted Living | Features



Demonstrating how assisted living technologies can help transform lives, solutions from manufacturer and designer Pressalit have been chosen to feature in the National Robotarium.

Now open on the Edinburgh campus of Heriot-Watt University, the National Robotarium houses technology and facilities, central to the development and testing of robotics and AI solutions in three distinct areas; Robotics and Autonomous Systems, Human-Robot Interaction and High Precision Manufacturing.

By focusing on entrepreneurship, job creation and building the digital skills of the workforce, the center hopes to provide a data-driven approach to industrial collaboration where humans and robots work in partnership. .

Within the centre, the Ambient Assisted Living Lab (AAL) focuses on reforming the way home care is delivered in the UK, using robotics and AI.

Using a recreated nursing home environment, AAL scientists and engineers will research and create smart technology solutions to help improve the physical and mental well-being of people with special needs. assisted living who strive to live independently.

Having designed autonomy technologies for kitchens and bathrooms for nearly fifty years, Pressalit was asked to contribute to the work carried out at the National Robotarium.


Professor Lynne Baillie, Head of Human-Robot Interaction at the National Robotarium, who leads research into life-supporting technologies, says: “Through the use of artificial intelligence, the Internet of objects (IoT) and smart sensors, we are developing technologies that can provide social, cognitive and physical assistance at home for those who need it, allowing them more freedom, autonomy and independence in their lives.

“The lab’s technology and equipment, including Pressalit’s smart rail systems, which facilitate the movement and adjustment of built-in furniture in the different spaces, allow us to develop and test our science with real people, by mimicking their real homes and living habits, which leads to better and more efficient solutions.

Presented in the AAL is the Pressalit PLUS rail system, which allows the vertical and horizontal adjustment of different bathroom products. The room can be configured to meet the individual needs of users and carers, maximizing space for wheelchair or carer access, while ensuring the future-proofing of the room.

The height-adjustable INDIVO kitchen system from Pressalit also brings a sense of independence in everyday tasks. With the push of a button, the height of the sink worktop and hob can be adjusted to suit standing and seated users, and wall cupboards can be easily accessed.

Tasks ranging from washing up, cooking and preparing food to sharing a meal at the table can be done in a safe, comfortable and inclusive environment.
