Magic: The Gathering now features Optimus Prime and Transformers

Wizards of the Coast and parent company Hasbro have unveiled new Magic: The Gathering cards for the Brothers’ War expansion, and it’s more than meets the eye.

For the first time, Transformers will be playable Magic: The Gathering cards during the Hasbro PulseCon reveal. The cards will be presented as the first Universes Beyond set that exists in another normal expansion. The six new cards revealed are:

  • Optimus Prime, Autobot Leader / Optimus Prime, Hero
  • Goldbug, Scrappy Scout / Goldbug, Humanity’s Ally
  • Starscream, Research Leader / Starscream, Power-Hungry
  • Soundwave, Top Captain / Soundwave, Sonic Spy
  • Flamewar, Streetwise Operative / Flamewar, Impetuous Veteran
  • Slicer, High Speed Antagonist / Slicer, Muscle Engaged

Since these robots can transform into cars and planes, these creature cards will use the double-sided mechanics established since the Innistrad expansion. When you meet certain conditions, the face up card turns into the face down card. According to an IGN report, there will be 15 Transformers cards in total. Each of them will be in two different styles; one depicts the G1 versions of the 80s cartoon/toyline, while the other depicts the latest Shattered Glass comics where the Autobots are the bad guys and the Decepticons are good. Nemesis Prime, anyone?

Due to their unique mechanics, these cards are only playable in Commander, Legacy, and Vintage formats. So no use of these bad boys in Standard tournament formats.

The Transformers aren’t the only popular pop culture IPs built into Magic: The Gathering. CCG also introduced a Warhammer 40K collection, as well as special Doctor Who, The Walking Dead, and Arcane: League of Legends sets.
